   Résumé
   Adapté d'un roman de Friedrich Dürrenmatt, le troisième film dirigé par Sean Penn est une quête métaphysique plus qu'un policier conventionnel, comme le point de départ le laisse pourtant penser: un inspecteur proche de la retraite, au lieu de partir pêcher au Mexique, fait le serment à des parents accablés par le meurtre de leur fillette de retrouver son assassin. Utilisant une technique de pêcheur (appâter, puis ferrer) pour capturer sa proie, il va devenir prisonnier de sa mission, dérivant dans une obsession proche de la folie, pour finir gérant d'une station-service isolée en pleine montagne, toujours dans l'attente de la capture. Plus que l'enquête, où Jack Nicholson (le policier) croise pourtant d'étranges personnages, c'est l'évolution interne de son héros qui intéresse le réalisateur, qui signe là un film remarquable dans son ambiguïté.
